Veterinary Academy: Horses & Large Animals
Spend a week in upstate New York working with and learning from teaching and staff veterinarians at the Pine Bush Equine Services & Veterinary Hospital and several equine rescues.
You can look forward to performing physical exams on rescued horses, honing your clinical skills in the lab, and watching demonstrations of gastroscopy, surgery, dentistry procedures, lameness exams, chiropractic work, and more. In addition to learning at the hospital, you’ll spend time working with horses at equine rescues and have a tour of an equine breeding center.
Prepare for the future
- Shadowing a working veterinarian as they care for rehabilitating horses and demonstrate procedures, diagnostic techniques, and treatments
- Learning about horse anatomy and practicing physical exams
- Enjoying a field visit to a nearby horse breeding facility where you’ll learn about breeding and reproductive health
By attending Veterinary Academy: Horses & Large Animals, you can earn up to 40 veterinary hours, a required part of every vet school application.

Program Highlights
Clinical Lab Rotations
Learn from your teaching veterinarian as you practice vital skills, including using a microscope to conduct blood smear examinations, calculating prescription dosages, and proper suturing techniques.
Horse Rehabilitation
Spend time at several equine rescue facilities and participate in hands-on labs on the horses there, including performing physical exams, practicing bandaging techniques, and identifying signs of illness or prior medical conditions.
Breeding Facility Visit
Learn about reproductive and neonatal health principles, preventative care techniques, and the importance of biosecurity and parasite control during a visit to a local horse breeding facility.
Anatomy Mastery
Study the musculoskeletal system as you learn more about the biomechanics of riding disciplines and equine anatomy.
